A rose by any other name…

Spring decided to arrive a bit early here and fresh green grass has replaced the dead winter grass. Shimmer prefers this over the hard sidewalk.  Because he usually decides where we’re going, we’ve been hitting a lot of large grassy areas not on our usual walks.

Today, Shimmer decided the best direction was down a street known for its drug activity at night. Usually, it’s pretty safe during the day, so I don’t mind going there, and besides, this street has a big hill full of beautiful green grass.

This afternoon, however, at one end, there was a group of three men huddled together on the other side of the street, doing who knows what. They could have been friends, they could have been lost tourists, maybe even the Mormons we saw earlier. It wasn’t our business and we just continued on. As we passed by, we couldn’t help overhearing them discussing Shimmer:

“What kind of dog that?” said one voice.

“A great dane,” came the confident reply.

“Damn, you like a walking Google.”

Shimmer, as if to confuse them, chose to start eating grass at that moment like a cow.

After a moment, he finished and walked off leaving them silent (I like to imagine, dumbfounded). We continued home, with Shimmer enjoying the day as any great cow dane would.
